Background and Education
I earned a BA with honors from Allegheny College in 1959 and an MSW in 1975 from the University of South Carolina. I began my clinical practice in 1973 in a mental health clinic where I worked until 1982 when I joined the Department of Psychiatry at Winston-Salem Health Care from which I retired in 1999. Since then I have been in the full time private practice of psychotherapy, individual, group, couple. and family. I have experience in substance abuse and inpatient hospital work.
I am a Certified Group Psychotherapist and Past President of the Carolinas Group Psychotherapy Society, an affiliate of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. I have experience training other professionals in group therapy and supervising therapists in group and individual modalities. I meet the requirements for the North Carolina Marriage and Family qualification.
I have training in:
Couple and family, psychodrama, gestalt, redecision, solution-focused and other brief approaches, reality therapy, object relations, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy, etc. I am a certified level II EMDR therapist (a strategy for treating post-traumatic stress disorder.)
